Natural Balance Swing… in more detail
Your Swing, Your Way
For those of you who want to get into the details, this page is for you. High level, the ball is not moving, and we are trying to swing our arms in the same exact way every single time. We are also trying to turn our body in the same exact way every time. An emphasis on the word “same” since golf is all about repeating a good result over and over again to get the best score. Let me share with you the learning objectives from my structured programs, so you can see how I would go about mastering these two fundamentals in your swing. To achieve your best swing, I would master these two fundamentals.
The Two Fundamentals
The Natural Balance of the Arms
The overarching goal here is to swing our arms in the most repeatable way back and through every single time. In other words, the “natural balance” of our arms. Here are the learning objectives associated with mastering the natural balance of your arms. We will understand: each arm individually for the clubface to be square; the balance of the arms swinging around our body and how this relates to striking the ball solid; exactly where to start our arm's at setup to continue on this balance around us; how much our wrists will be cocked vs uncocked; the connection between each arm to the chest to achieve a well connected golf swing; the exact position of the elbows and the keys to keep them close together, leading to a balance of the arms around the body; the importance of a straight lead arm to a consistent contact point with the ground, and a consistent balance of the arms and swing path; the connected top of the backswing position to prevent overswinging; how to keep a straight lead arm, is it okay to bend it (prevents a hook); the importance of starting with our lead arm straight ON IT’S NATURAL PATH, starting with the lead arm straight off it’s natural path will make it hard to keep straight; the role of the trail arm working around the body (tucked In, get it just right, slow motion, in balance around the body not too tucked, forearm over); a consistent release; shaft lean
The Two Fundamentals
The Natural Balance of the Body
The overarching goal here is to turn our body in the most repeatable way back and through every single time. In other words, the “natural balance” of our body. Here are the learning objectives associated with mastering the natural balance of your body.
We will understand: the need to turn our shoulders on an angle to prevent hitting the ball fat; how to correctly turn around spine (shoulders down, not at ball); the relationship to the ground with a hula hoop; the importance of tilting and turning; the airplane drill to feel and see the proper way to turn; the natural motion of the body and how this relates to striking the ball first; the details of a weight shifts importance to strike the ball first; the natural positions of the body on its natural motion starting straight up and down then working our way to the ground; the natural balance of our body has a natural rounding to the lower back and slightly less knee bend than you might imagine, this generates an effortless golf swing, ball first contact, and a smooth, body-friendly swing; the importance of not overturning, especially with wedges and lies more bent over, and how to feel this in real time with any lie on the golf course; the top of the backswing and each position of the swing in slow motion with the ability to hit in front of the golf ball; the relationship between our arm’s natural balance and our body’s natural balance; the perfect amount each foot should be flared out depending on body type; the swing starter (the first move of the golf swing) to get your swing in balance and in rhythm; our unique distance with each golf club in the bag; the importance of staying centered in the swing; there is a magical line to stay over to strike the ball first consistently; how to stay over that line with a balance of the legs; you can be too far forward at the setup position, there is a sweet spot; we will feel the hips working back and through, and the position to start them in to get your hips on your team; push&push; setting up on natural path affects ball position (heel vs toes, in balance); turn 1; turn 2; turn 3; there is only one spot to setup at to continue on natural path; FEEL YOUR GOLF SWING; flatter turn angle the less you bend over/longer clubs; transition
Senior Natural Balance Method
For seniors, I discard the natural balance of the body fundamental. When you think about it, the club needs to run into the ball. To do that, we need to swing our arms. But do we need to turn our body back and through in balance to hit the golf ball? No, we do not.
So, what value does turning our body add? The only reason to turn our body in the golf swing is to add a touch more distance—that’s it. As a senior, it is hard to count on your body to do the same thing every time, but your arms can provide that consistency. Why not preset impact and only have to worry about one simple thing: swinging your arms? Instead of having to synchronize swinging our arms and turning our body, we simplify the process.
By getting into a position at setup where, when we swing our arms, we would naturally hit the ball first, we eliminate unnecessary variables. Remaining perfectly steady in this position ensures great golf shots with ease and consistency.
Why Consistency is Everything
Golf is a precise sport. The ball isn’t moving—it’s your job to make the exact same move every single time. If you can’t swing your arms and turn your body in the same way consistently, then that’s not your best golf swing.
By embracing your natural motion, you’ll unlock a swing that’s repeatable, powerful, and uniquely yours.
The Perfect Swing
Once you’ve mastered the natural balance of your arms and body, the rest is simple:
Ball Placement: Position the ball correctly in your stance.
Grip Alignment: Use a grip that matches your swing.
These final touches complete your Natural Balance Swing—the simplest and most effective way to play golf.
